Organizing An Artist

Organizing an artist is not always easy.  I KNOW, I AM ONE!  HA!

A few weeks ago I was challenged to look at all my characters and take inventory.  It was the best thing I have done in a long time. I think I came up with about 19 different cartoon character lines. I am not kidding when I say my studio is full of life and noise!

This is my attempt at organizing. I am better to keep it all in front of me. Putting art in file folders and then in a filing cabinet assures me that my ideas will fade away.  Instead I gathered all the ideas for each line and clipped them together.  You can see in the picture above.

Now I can work on one line at a time. I can also look and see what needs to be done to make each line complete.

Each day is a work in progress, but at least I can see what the next step is without looking in a folder in my computer.

Here is a funny quote I found.

  • “Organized people are just too lazy to look for things.”

Ideas!

Life for the artist is a continual collection of ideas.  Those ideas generate new work. It’s a fun process.

Ideas come from so many sources.  Books, movies, fabrics, nature, magazines, paintings, dreams and more. Sometimes they simply drop out of the sky into my thoughts.  I love good ideas.  They are scrumptious morsels to feast on.  I have some waiting for me now.

Creative Juices On Tap

A new monthly planner for 2016, a bag full of inspiring library books, sketch books, pencils, pens, watercolor pencils, book on tape…all have set my creative juices flowing and i have not even used them yet! I am in the “Happy Place!”

It helps that i am ready for Christmas early this year. Don’t ask me how i did it. I feel like i forgot something big. Haha!

Right now I am basking in the sun shining streaming through my windows and nestling in for a new creative journey.

More posts to come!
Merry Christmas my dear friends. You are my best gifts!

It’s Coming!

The first white flakes

The first white flakes

I love this time of year.  Fall gives way to winter weather. Cold, blustery and white!  We turn on the wood stove and sit by the fire.  Christmas is around the corner. I am not into the flurry of the season, but the quiet peaceful beauty.  Simplicity calls me. Lone candles and a few ornaments hung on a small tree reminding me of loved ones and some who are not with me any more. I smile. I am thankful to have had good memories. I think about what I can do to make a good memory for someone else.

Happy Toosday!

And why am I happy?  The “flu” flew by in record time.  One day in bed is enough for this happy camper. It’s back to the studio!

Over the weekend I attended the Picture Book Summit in the privacy of my studio!  I joined more than 300 other authors and illustrators. What fun!  We listened to advice from all the experts from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm!  Barely enough time for lunch and potty breaks but well worth the time. There is already talk of another one next year.  If you are an author or illustrator I highly recommend it!

ONWARD to new adventures!

Home Away From Home – Out My Window

To some, it is just what it says, a 14 foot Escape travel trailer. To me, it is another place I can escape to do some writing.

From what I hear from other friends in the creative field, getting alone is crucial to creativity. When we bought this little gem, I imagined having my early morning coffee in it. Home away from home? Not yet, we have not driven it out of the driveway yet. But, I am using it!

It’s name? We tossed a few ideas around. I have settled on Mobeleo. It’s a cross between Mobile and the famous cartoon character named Oblio. The little boy who was born without a point. (It ends good!)

I have heard many people say that motor homes are rarely used. Not this one! My studio is so jammed packed these days that this spartan little trailer is perfect!

Not Enough Time In The Day

Oh my!  Life goes by so quickly. Do you feel it like I do?  I wake up, and suddenly it it bedtime!  This happens more when I am doing what I love, creating art or writing stories for my art. I could work right through lunch and dinner if my body would let me, but it cries out for a break!

So what is happening in the studio this week?  Fabric designing and story polishing. Below you will see a horizontal pattern I made yesterday.  It features Burl and Briley, my new little buddies.  I am having so much fun discovering their delightful little world in my writing.

Last night I met with my new critique group.  They are amazing professional writers!  Every one of them!  Eileen Ross, Susan Bergstrom, Penny Bergman and Stephanie Bendel.  I look forward to our meetings twice a month. I sit in amazement hearing their stories. I love their hearts!  I love their passion! I am hopeful they will all get their latest work published. The world needs to hear their stories!

Thanks girls!!!  For letting me be in your circle!

Onward!  On to another day of adventure!!
