On Being Brave

Life as an artist is not always a path that they feel they have chosen.  More over it is a journey one feels compelled to take.  To not take it means a life unfulfilled and a gift that is wasted, not to mention that inward voice that whispers,  “CREATE IT!”

To be successful, one must be committed to the work, hardened to rejection, and open to change. All of those things are challenges. The art we create is a part of who we are.  To subject it to criticism does not feel good! …. even yet our motto should be… “Get over it and move on!”

I believe the good artists do just that!  They move on!  In fact, any successful person in life continues moving on.  We learn from the past but we don’t live in it!

An artist must be brave!

Flying South?

There they go!  The geese!  They are flying south for the winter!  Wait… no… now they are flying north… or.. wait, they are turning around and going east!  yes, east… no… they are now going west!

So, which IS it?  In fact,  the geese seem to live here all year round?  So which geese fly south?

Last winter when I was on a walk with my sister we came to a pond and suddenly two large white SNOW geese took off before our eyes.  Their wing span was so much bigger than our usual geese.  It was amazing!  I have not seen them since.  Perhaps these are the geese that fly south?

This is the time of year where I think I might like to fly south.  There are 59 more days until Spring!  I am counting the days!!

Sliding into 2010!

It is sometimes hard to believe that 10 years have passed since the year 2000.

Advancements in technology have brought us amazing things like IPods, cell phones, dvds, blue ray players… the list goes on!  I have to catch myself at times saying things like, “I remember when the color tv came into our home for the first time!”  (Ahhhack!  I sound like a grandma!  … oh wait,  I AM a grandma!  ha!)

instead of resisting the new,  I find I want to learn all about what else is coming down the pike.

I recently encountered a website called Spoonflower.com.   I can take a small piece of my own art and have it made into fabric, then delivered to my door in less that two weeks!  It’s amazing!

What else?. . . I can go to MyPublisher.com and make my very own, one of a kind book!  What?  Really? Yes!!… and only for about 35.00!

I am not sure what the next 10 years will bring but I can tell you this, my personal theme for 2010 is ” Great Expectations!”.

Still Shopping

Leslie Skye shops

It’s January 2, 2010. We are clearly into the New Year and my shopping continues.  Is it a great deal on a sweater?  A new coat on sale? … No!  I am shopping for new ideas!  The hunting process for a new idea varies.  It could be going to the store and seeing what’s OUT there, or a trip to the library for ideas, or looking at websites, or… or…  one of the best ways is when those ideas find YOU!

This morning I went to visit a friend and look at her collection of Christmas villages. Her excitement was contagious.

It was great fun peering into the tiny buildings and imagining what it might be like to be a wee little person living in them.  It did not stop there, that thought lead me to a story idea and even an idea for a whole new LINE.

I found out this new friend is a buyer for a local store.  She told me she is attending the Atlanta gift show next week.  I am sure my eyes got big!  I LOVE going to trade shows!!!  She also mentioned  a gift show in Denver next month that I did not know about. Suddenly I was wanting to GO!  She will get me a pass for one day.

See how that string of events led me to a new path?  That is my favorite part of life!  Twists and turns!

What is around YOUR next corner?  Let us keep our eyes and hearts open and expecting.  Let’s go SHOPPING!
